1 Taught in Dungeons on 9/24/2014, 6:12 pm

Here I shall be collecting a list of wisdom I've learned from running dungeons/trials/raids. These may have been told to me, things I figured out, or the like. Feel free to join in on the fun. ^_^

General knowledge:

1: High level does not equal skill. Neither does high ilvl.

2: Never follow the DRG.

3: Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

4: Keep to your role. It saves many wipes and much heartache.

5: Disregard rule 4 in emergencies.

6: Dodge. It's always more important than what you're doing. Always.

7: Never blame the rest of the party. Even if it is the rest of the party, take  second look at what you're doing. And a third. If you can do a little better, do.

8: Also don't follow the NIN

9: Don't panic.

10: In higher level instances (Ultima hard mode as an example) aoe attacks are going off fast enough that once the targeting area disappears and the attack animation is going off, running into that animation is a good way to dodge the next attack. The timing can be tricky and you have to keep in mind that this method won't always work for every boss.

Steven Mcnubbin wrote:To help clarify on General Knowledge #10, I have YET to find an attack in the game that is telegraphed, that you can safely run inside of during he animation and get hurt.

As long as you're outside of the attack's telegraph when it disappears, you can run right back inside the attack and take 0 damage from it. This has saved my ass many times in just about every duty ever, and especially during Ultima HM last night.

11: Wipes happen. A lot. Learn from them. Take a break if you need it. Don't get discouraged.

12: Ninja hide is broken by dogs. It is not broken by opening treasure chests. More information in Seaking and You: A Guide for Rogues and Ninjas.

13: So long as you have not been hit, have done no damage to anything still alive, or healed anyone with agro: YOU ARE NOT IN COMBAT. This means that NIN can pop hide in the middle of a horde, you can cast a cross class rez, any number of things of the like.

14: tbc
Heals:

1: Heal.

2: The tank is actually your lowest priority.

3: Keep yourself alive.

4: Ignore the previous rules if it will save the party.

5: It almost never will.

6: Also, don't forget to buff.

7: If you're confident in your heals, you may not need to buff. People still expect it though.

8: tbc
Tank:

1: You love hate.

2: I don't care. You really do love it.

3: Okay, think of it this way: hate is better than pie.

4: Got that?

5: Don't share your hate pie.

6: Nope, you don't want to. No one else can have your hate pie.

7: love the hate. Revel in it's power.

8: O_O love it.

9: Bored with dungeons? Do them differently! Take another route!

10: As a PLD, Shield Oath is your friend. Only reason not to have it on is if you're OT.

11: When, not if, you mess up: know how to recover. Cooldowns aren't meant to always be on. When you take a big hit (lag spike, derp, whatever the reason) one of a few things may happen:

First, your healer may recover perfectly and keep everyone alive by sheer awesomeness.

Second they may struggle and you'll need to pop convalescence (probably a good idea anyway).

Third you may need to give them some time by popping a damage reducing cooldown or two.

Fourth, and final, only you lived through the hit. In that case, so do your best and maybe you can stay alive. Otherwise just take the wipe and learn what went wrong there.

12: Ninja have hide. If they're walking hidden into a horde of enemies there's no need to panic or hurry. You may need to save their ass though.

13: tbc
Dps:

1: Hit things.

2: Harder.

3: Faster.

4: better.

5: Stronger.

6: Aaahhhhh! You have hate! Stop hitting for a bit.

7: Still have hate? Kill things. (Sometimes the tank doesn't see the stuff or is busy saving the healer. You're more expendable, sorry!)

8: Faster.

9: Low health? Good thing you cross classed cure/physick/second wind

10: You didn't? Fix that later.

11: Let the tank pull.

12: If you have more range than the tank it is pretty nice of you to pop the fleshy pods in Toto-Rak.

13: If there's a full LB bar (meaning as full as it can be) there are very few times you shouldn't use it. if you can pop a LB3 early on you may be able to get another towards the end of the fight depending on the boss and party.

14: tbc
Well, that's what I can think of off the top of my head. Any pointers/suggestions/additions let me know. ^_^ good luck!

If the insane Lalafell Black Mage wants to run off ahead of the party, let them. You'll catch up when they need a Raise.

^_^ I hope my list is being helpful: it's little things I've learned through experience or advice I've been given. On top of that I hope it saves some frustration for anyone starting in a role or just not quite getting it.

To help clarify on General Knowledge #10, I have YET to find an attack in the game that is telegraphed, that you can safely run inside of during he animation and get hurt.

As long as you're outside of the attack's telegraph when it disappears, you can run right back inside the attack and take 0 damage from it. This has saved my ass many times in just about every duty ever, and especially during Ultima HM last night.

Erm. Actually if YOU have hit it still counts as in combat, too. As long as you haven't caused damage (or healed someone with agro) though
